The Drum Fill

Drummers: Wanna show us what you got?

I've been working on some Off Beat Hi-Hat Beats for the past week or so from my DVD teaching collection. This might be a piece of cake to some, but for a beginner/intermediate drummer I was happy to get into them and learn a few cool beats. I was working on the final one today before I move onto some "Intermediate" Tom Fills and I was loving the sound of it. As most of you know, it feels nice when you are working on a beat and after awhile you hit it... it doesn't get much better than that does it? The only things close I can compare it to are: 1) working on a software project and banging your head off the wall for awhile and then it finally works and 2) playing golf and being in the zone and feeling that nothing can get in your way.

I'm sure some of the experienced drummers on here won't think this is a tough Beat to play, but I'm actually uploading the image of the music so others can give it a go. It's one of those simple beats that I think sounds pretty sweet.

I am planning on recording myself practicing soon and uploading the videos for some feedback from the great drummers on here... just be nice please :) At least I don't wear Orange Crocs when I play like the guy in the other video we have on here! lol (Note: sorry to anyone else that wears Orange Crocs, it's a bit of a running joke on here).

Here's another one that gave me some grief for awhile:

Anyway, let me know what you think of these beats. Cheers Everyone.

Try playing along to Nine Inch Nails - ONLY (With Teeth Album) - it's a very simple pattern but gets rockin with the off-beat high hat.

Not sure if I can make it today... looking at some house lots and trying to finish up some work. Thanks for the offer, I would love to check out the studio sometime... I'll send you a message with my cell phone number. Hopefully I'll be going tonight, still not feelin' 100% great so if the weather isn't to nice I may stay home. Cheers

Hopefully... Either way if you wanted to swing by the studio today you're certainly welcome to.

Cool, thanks... I'll give it a go... I just have to finish some work first :-) Are you heading to the show tonight?

The open hi-hat is optional but, try really focusing on accenting the 2 and 4, and leave the other snare notes really, really low. If think you'll like it.

Yeah, I was trying to throw in the open hi-hat actually... kinda lost it a bit though at this point :) Glad you like it!

You can also experiment with opening the hi-hat on the "&" of 1 and 3, closing it on their respective "ah"s.

This groove can start to take on a life of it's own after a while. I'd love to see you interpretation of it.

That's a neat pattern. I'm playing through it right now and it's funny, once you get it going really up to speed it starts almost having the feel of a reverse paradiddle (RRLR LLRL). If you changed the "e" of 1 and 3 to a kick instead of a snare it would make it feel even more like that.

As it's written right there though I have a suggestion. Keep all the snare notes as ghost strokes and accent the 2 and 4 only for the snare part. Now that's something I could groove to!

BTW, you may already know this but incase you don't... When you play a groove where no two voices are played at the same time, it's called a "linear" pattern. This is a good example of one.

If anyone is wondering "what the heck is an Off Beat Hi-Hat Beat". It's basically when you play the Hi-Hat only on the "&" and not on the 1,2,3 or 4.
