Just got myself a Macbook Pro... I also have a Yamaha DTXtreme IIS electronic kit with midi connectivity... and of course the Mac comes with Garageband. I don't have any more funds to invest in Protools or Cubase (which I'm aware would likely produce better results - I have Cubase SX and Reason on my desktop PC).
...but my question is - anyone have any advice on a 'box' or interface to plug my kit in (via midi) to the Macbook Pro and eventually I will want to plug in a few mics to this box...
What's a reasonable solution for recording (appreciating the fact that I don't have $1500 for pro solution at this point?) Any other thoughts or advice related to recording is welcome!
For live 2-channel audio recording, I've had success with an M-AUDIO Mobile Pre USB. It's got phantom power and can drive a pair of condenser mics -- get some stands and set them up as overheads for quick but decent recordings of an ensemble or your drum kit.
For MIDI I've used a M-AUDIO MIDISport USB interface. Admittedly I've only recorded keyboard with it, but I suspect it would work fine with MIDI drums. Seems like GarageBand has some decent drum sounds.
Update: My buddy decided to sell a bunch of equipment and I ended up picking a few new toys for a steal! Now I just how to figure out how it all works LOL!! I'm thinking I could record all of our jam sessions a little nicer now. If only I had the $$ for Logic or ProTools now.
Just a warning (even though it's what I use!), Logic has got a.....interesting......GUI compared to Pro Tools and some other DAWs I've used. I've gotten used to it, but I know a lot of people have been frustrated with it. Just a heads up if you get to that purchase decision down the line!
